$95 · Antique Gaudy Welsh set of three children’s mugs

Antique Gaudy Welsh set of three children's mugs. Circa 1830. This rare set was originally manufactured in Wales (and later in Great Britain) for the export market, the name Gaudy Welsh was coined by Americans due to its popularity with the Welsh who emigrated to the United States. In Great Britain the patterns are known as Swansea Cottage. These cheerful toy mugs were hand-made and hand-decorated and, while the pattern on each mug is slightly different, they all share the typical Gaudy Welsh colours of cobalt blue, and shades of russet, green and lustre on a cream background. One of the reasons these children's mugs are so rare is because most toy ceramics did not survive their original owner's childhood. Sold as a set of three. Dimensions They range in height from 1¾ inches (4.5 cm) to 2 inches (5 cm) and the diameters range from 1¾ inches (4.5 cm) to 2 inches (5 cm). Condition The squat mug with the larger diameter has two small chips on the bottom edge (see close-up photo) and a barely visible fleabite on the upper rim. Both of the other mugs have barely visible hairlines (look closely at the photos of individual mugs). Nevertheless, these are charming and unusual pieces and would be a welcome addition to an antique toy collection. Delivery or Pick-up Did you know that we ship and deliver?
