The substitute for the ball joint connection is a different ball joint piece that is the same colour & works well. Still, it is not original. Some pieces have a fade that is common for 1980 (45yrs old) piece. This set has been discounted with that in mind. Check my sellers list for more Lego sets. Buy multiple sets & get a better deal.
