An extraordinary example of Brazilian modernism, this Moleca sofa by Sergio Rodrigues stands as one of the most expressive and technically resolved seating designs of the 20th century. Crafted entirely from old growth solid Brazilian rosewood, the form is both muscular and generous, celebrating structure, comfort, and material honesty in equal measure. The architecture of the sofa is fully exposed and unapologetically sculptural. Massive through tenon joints are locked in place with hand carved tusk wedges, a construction method more often associated with timber framing than furniture joinery. This system gives the Moleca its unmistakable stance and ensures remarkable long term stability. The rosewood frame carries deep, natural patina, revealing decades of use without compromise to its integrity. The seating system remains fully original and untouched. Thick leather straps span the frame, supporting oversized cushions that retain their original leather, buttons, and character. The surface wear tells an honest story of age and use, with beautifully softened leather that speaks to the quality of the original materials. Every button, strap, and fastening is original to the piece, a rarity of this level. Designed in the late 1950s, the Moleca was Sergio Rodrigues’s response to creating a distinctly Brazilian modern language. Rejecting European restraint, he embraced weight, comfort, and craft, producing furniture that felt rooted in Brazil’s landscape and culture. The Moleca became one of his most iconic works, admired for its radical construction and inviting presence. This sofa is presented exactly as found, preserved in full original condition. For clients seeking a more tailored finish, we offer the option of a complete custom restoration, including leather, straps, and cushioning, executed to museum level standards. Whether kept untouched or restored, this Moleca remains a cornerstone piece of Brazilian design history and a powerful anchor in any serious collection.
